My main influences have been dada, pop art and surrealism. Two additional factors are simplicity and chance. 

Some paintings are safe, unthreatening souvenirs. Their function is to cover a bare wall. Some demand their own place in the world.

Coordinating with the sofa is not the job of art. It will likely clash with everything. Don’t change the artwork to match the rug, change the environment to be more compatible with art. Priorities are out of whack when a sofa tells the artwork what to do.
